What does a notary do?

Notaries prepare, witness or certify documents for use abroad, such as:

• Powers of attorney for businesses and individuals

• Company documents such as resolutions, minutes, accounts and reports

• Certificates of law

• Statutory declarations, oaths and affidavits

• Contracts

• Authentication of identity and signatures

• Foreign property transfers

• Verifying UK birth, marriage and death certificates

• UK degree certificates

Information you need to provide

Finian will always need to see at an early stage a copy of the documents you need him to deal with for you, and the instructions from the advisors or authorities in the country that is asking you to visit a notary here in London. He will also need discuss with you the purpose of the document, and your understanding of it.

He will also always need to verify your identity - he will need to see your passport and an up-to-date proof of address – so please do have those to hand!

Fees

Finian’s notary fees start at £75 + VAT in relation to instructions from individuals, and £100 + VAT for commercial instructions. He will discuss with you the fees for specific instructions once he has had the chance to find out more from you about your requirements.

Finian is a member of the Notaries Society and more details about the role of a notary are available here: The_Notary_leaflet_-_English_2025.pdf

Like all notaries in this country, Finian’s notary practice is regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Finian carries the required professional indemnity liability cover of £1 million for his work and will provide all required regulatory information to you – including information relating to your personal data, privacy and redress rights - at the outset of your instruction to him.
